It is primarily influenced by the most popular English technology site Digg, where when a user submits a news article which is then placed in the “upcoming” area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page. Pligg is an open source CMS that can be downloaded and used for free.

Main features

Pligg CMS provides social networking software that encourages visitors to register on website so that they can submit content and connect with other users. It creates websites where stories are created and voted on by members, not website editors. Pligg CMS is based on open source PHP and MySQL technologies that allows it to be installed on a relatively small budget. It helps in managing a site with an unlimited number of authors. The registered users are in control of the website’s content. It is a user driven CMS that relies on the author’s content and participation to manage new articles.

Pligg was first used as a simple CMS to let users submit and vote on news articles. It mainly works on voting on stories that interest you and articles that receive enough votes will appear on the homepage of your Pligg site. Pligg has a 5 star rating method for voting or the traditional numbered voting method as seen on sites like Digg and Mixx.

General features included in Pligg are RSS feeds, SEO enhanced, multiple languages. RSS feeds to follow the latest news from your favorite sites. It allows subscribing to a user’s voting trends, the front page, upcoming page and categories. Search engine optimization helps you to increase more traffic to your site by being as search engine friendly as possible and help get your site indexed faster and more complete. Users can choose from multiple languages during installation.

Various community features included in pligg. It allows users to share articles with other members who share a common interest in a specific topic. You can join a group to submit topic related articles that other members would also be interested in. This social networking will not work as per its name so they have included a private messaging module with Pligg, so that you can send your friends a message that they can respond to. Not only one can comment on articles, but they can rate comments posted by other users. This affects the way that the comments are displayed, putting higher quality comments on top, where they belong.

Roadmap

Starting from social bookmarking, Pligg now contains certain social networking features. When a user signs up on a Pligg site they get their own profile page where they can change their settings, send personal messages, and add an avatar, make friends and other great features. Pligg has considerably expanded from just a translation of meneame to a very popular CMS system.

Developers

Pligg, founded by Yankidank and headed by lead developer AshDigg, was originally an English translation of Menéame’s source code when it was released in early December 2005. In December 17 2005, the name Pligg was added to differentiate from its Spanish version.

This is a great system that I use for my jazz community. It functions just like Digg and has a similar look. It’s great for specific niches that have a large following from other websites. That way you can come in and become a middle man who controls that niche by allowing others to submit content. I would suggest this to anyone including my worse enemy. I Pligg it!!

Pligg is a CMS that i don’t like because of low flexibility. With this CMS you could only make a social bookmarking page. In other hand it is great because of Digg features that can bring you more visitors. Overall Pligg is not CMS that i recommend for you to use if you would like to built a complete website.

Pligg CMS based website always being attacked by spammers.
Have you heard about that blackhat tool called the autopligg.
It is a really powerful tool that can spam pligg website.
And sadly, it become much more powerful than the pligg script itself. It has started to get a lot more attention as of late and I imagine that unless some major changes are made by the developers of Pligg, it doesn’t bode well. This tool has been around for long enough that Pligg’s developers and community should have come up with actionable solutions.
one of the biggest pains with the Pligg has always been the category manager. Adding categories was simple enough but it required a full page reload after you added a category, this is not an efficient method and a pain. Sub-categories were always the major problem, again a full page reload to add it, then dragging it usually twice and dropping it over the parent category, again a full page
reload each time. Pligg needs to tap into existing resources within the CMS and make this section ajaxed and create a better manager like SWCMS has.

Pligg installation is quite good, built in features are low if I may say. The security is good. Performance is normal. It’s a great CMS for people who want to get easy visitors and want to let internet know about their site. Overall Pligg is a great social bookmarking CMS but i don’t have any knowledge about their support.
