Joomla is one of the most used Content Management Systems in the world. Joomla is the result of the fork of a software called Mambo. Mambo was a CMS that was used to create websites and managing their content through simple web interface. Joomla is the fork of Mambo. Fork implies the development of a new project by working on the source code of another (parent ) project to create a distinct piece of software. So, the development of Joomla was made possible by modifying the source code of project Mambo. Joomla came into existence on August 17, 2005 by the Joomla development team. It is written in PHP and uses My SQL to store content. Project Mambo was owned by Miro International and the development of Joomla from Mambo was on the verge of igniting a controversy as people referred to it as Mambo’s next release. On September 1,2005 Joomla was given the name by Andrew Eddie which meant all together. Before the actual name was given, it being the fork of Mambo did not have an official name. United Nations website is maintained by Joomla. Automotive majors like Porsche, Hyundai are among the big companies that use Joomla as their CMS.

Main features
Putting first things first, the most appealing thing that the user finds in using Joomla is aesthetics. Joomla is simply a treat to designers who would like to experiment with various designs for the website. People who are relatively new to CMS and website hosting find Joomla very appealing because of its visual appeal and ease of use. Joomla is also an MVC( Model View Controller) which help u to make portable, user-friendly and secure websites.
If it is a treat for Designers, it is equally a treat for developers. Joomla code has a large capacity for development and customization which attracts the community of developers. Though not the most famous among the developers community, it definitely ranks high among other CMS. With some experience users can build advanced websites without many hassles. Joomla also help developers in developing plug-ins and widgets.
Roadmap & Philosophy
Joomla is backed by an extensive network of developers. The most recent release is Joomla 1.5.15. Apart from this, Joomla 1.6, an alpha version is developed for testing purposes. Joomla’s USP is graphical flexibility and ease of creation of complex websites. Addon modules support a wide variety of functionalities and is slowly picking up among the users. The foundation is in the process of releasing a better version for more structural flexibility.
Developers
Andrew Eddi, Editor in Chief. Andrew is an accomplished PHP web developer having been involved in many projects since 2002. Beside Andrew there is a so called Joomla Core Team of developers.

Joomla script is very detailed script and a bit difficult if compared to other content management systems. On the other hand, it has more specialties accordingly. It is not as common as wordpress but it has many uses which wordpress doesn’t have.
Of course its installation is a bit difficult for amateur webmasters. If i compare this joomla script to other systems, i can say that i hesitate to use this script as it is a bit complicated to use.

I hate to say it but Joomla isn’t all that great. I’m shocked every time I see a site using this platform. Everything from the themes to the widget blocks have caused me much trouble. I will never even attempt to use it again. Take my word for it and try a better cms because using Joomla will only cause you stress!

Joomla is a great open source CMS and i have used it a lot lately. I like Joomla because Joomla is flexible. If you use default plugins and extensions you will have a blog, if you use other you can have a ecommerce shop or a picture hosting site. I would say that Joomla is the best CMS for people that want to have fully customizable website with a CMS. Joomla is easy to learn and easy to use. It’s safe and themes and plugins can make Joomla sites look like anything that you want.

Since Joomla is so easy to use, as a Web designer or developer, you can quickly build sites for your clients. Then, with a minimal amount of instruction, you can empower your clients to easily manage their own sites themselves.
If your clients need specialized functionality, Joomla is highly extensible and thousands of extensions (most for free under the GPL license) are available in the Joomla Extensions Directory.
